[Salon] Donroe Docrtine on Panama got small supporters

The most telling part here is that the only Latin American countries the U.S. managed to rally in support of their scheme to expropriate Panama's port from CK Hutchison (without any compensation!) are Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago - i.e. not a single major Latin American economy.

In other words, the "Donroe doctrine" isn't exactly looking too popular in the region...

Which makes sense: if a country signs this statement, it effectively means legitimizing political pressure by the U.S. to expropriate China-related assets, and thereby facing a major disruption in their economic ties with China - which is what's happening in Panama.

This is objectively against the interests of most Latin American countries given that China is the top trading partner for most of them.

In fact I suspect most of them silently back China here: they have an interest in Washington's scheme failing here because they understand that, if it succeeds, it makes it easier for all of them to become a future target for the same playbook.
